The International Conference on Metallurgical Coatings and Thin Films (ICMCTF) is recognized as the premier international conference on thin-film deposition, characterization, and advanced surface engineering. It provides a forum and networking venue for scientists, engineers, and technologists from academia, government laboratories, and industry. Attendees from all over the world come to present their findings, exchange ideas, share insights, make new friends, and renew old acquaintances. The Conference typically draws more than 700 attendees, covering 40 oral technical sessions and a well-attended Thursday evening poster session. This year, there are several special interest lectures being featured throughout the conference week.
ICMCTF 2018 will have eight technical symposia A through H and four topical symposia, addressing experimental, theoretical, and manufacturing issues associated with the development of new coating materials and processes, novel methods of analysis and characterization, and approaches to scale-up for commercial applications.
In addition to the technical program, the Conference features a two-day industrial exhibition, Tuesday and Wednesday, April 24 and 25, showcasing the latest in equipment, materials and services used for the deposition, monitoring, and characterization of coatings and thin films. The Exhibition is open to the public.
An educational program of Short Courses and Focused Topic Sessions (FTS) will be offered throughout the week.
Each year, the R.F. Bunshah Award Laureate and three outstanding Graduate Student Award winners are celebrated during a special convocation late Wednesday afternoon, April 25, followed by a festive poolside buffet reception in the evening.
The Town and Country Resort Hotel and Convention Center, located in sunny San Diego of Southern California, will be the official conference venue, providing a relaxed atmosphere for discussion and networking among attendees.
Significant advances in contact mechanics have been achieved since the first theoretical derivations a few centuries ago, primarily associated with contact problems in statics and dynamics involving friction, adhesion, wear, roughness, heat or electric conduction, and also with materials not only linear elastic. Principles of contacts mechanics can be applied in many traditional mechanical engineering areas such as locomotive wheel-rail contact, coupling devices, braking systems, tires, bearings, combustion engines, mechanical linkages, gasket seals, metal forming, ultrasonic welding, electrical contacts, and many others. Current challenges in the field regard the extension of contact mechanics methodologies to the micro- and the nano-scales, to coupled multi-field problems, and the application to finite elasticity.
The main objective of this course is to convey, in a self-contained manner, the fundamental concepts for the classification of the types of contact, the mathematical methods for the formulation of the contact problems, and the numerical procedures required for their solution. In addition to the methodologies, a wide class of applications will be covered, including contact problems in mechanical engineering, microelectronics and nanomechanics.
A taxonomy of contacts and the half-space solutions for linear elastic problems will be provided. For the class of complete contacts, asymptotic methods are formulated and applied to mechanical engineering problems. Further concepts for modelling contact problems with friction and partial slip will also be provided. Methods to formulate contact problems in the presence of coupled fields, such as thermo-elastic and electro-elastic contact problems, are then presented together with applications to mechanical engineering and microelectronics. An overview on numerical methods for the approximate solution of contact problems will also be provided (boundary element method, finite element method, molecular dynamics) with attention to complex problems characterized by multi-scale roughness, emphasizing the advantages and disadvantages of each technique. Finally, advanced contact problems involving lubrication, roughness and interaction between bodies undergoing finite deformation will complete the course.
Each set of lectures will be designed to convey a strong background on theory and numerical methods, with also in-depth treatment of cutting-edge research topics and applications. The final aim of this intensive course is to provide a compact yet comprehensive overview of contact mechanics in technology and its current challenges.
The lectures are primarily tailored for doctoral students of applied mathematics, mechanics, engineering and physics with a strong research interest in theoretical modeling, numerical simulation and experimental characterization of contact problems in technology. They are also suited for young and senior researchers in the above-mentioned and neighboring fields working in academia or in private research and development centers, interested in gaining a compact yet comprehensive overview of contact mechanics from its fundamental mathematical background, to the computational methods and the experimental techniques available for the solution of contact problems.
Nordtrib is a bi-yearly conference organized by our Scandinavian colleagues. Every 2 years one of the tribology research groups in Denmark, Norway, Sweden or Finland hosts the event. In 2018 it is Sweden’s turn!

Fatigue is an old problem, but still responsible for many unexpected failures, mainly because microscopic defects become critical in a relatively short time. The subject is relevant to modern technology and a wide range of industrial applications, such as additive manufacturing processes and new materials. Safe life, fail safe and damage tolerance are various approaches to deal with fatigue design. Tribology, i.e. the study of rubbing interfaces, on the other hand, is a relatively new area, but has also crucial importance to limit damage occurring at the surfaces between interacting components, in the form of e.g. wear and contact fatigue. The symposium will aim to receive contributions from the broad areas of solid mechanics, fatigue and fracture, and tribology, which target new methodologies and recent advances in these fields, with particular emphasis placed on the problems occurring at the boundary between those disciplines.
7th International Conference on Fracture Fatigue and Wear, 9-10 July 2018, Ghent University, Belgium
The seventh international conference on Fracture, Fatigue and Wear (FFW 2018) will be held in the city of Ghent, Belgium. The overall objective of the conference is to bring together international scientists and engineers in academia and industry in fields related to Fracture Mechanics, Fatigue of Materials, Tribology and Wear of Materials. The conference covers industrial engineering applications of the above topics including theoretical and analytical methods, numerical simulations and experimental techniques. One of the aims of conference is to promote cooperation between international scientists and engineers from a large number of disciplines, who are involved in research related to Fracture, Fatigue and Wear.
EMCR is an international conference about corrosion electrochemistry, held in various countries since 1982. The single-session format means you can catch all the presentations and not miss out on anything. The first international conference on Numerical Modelling in Engineering (NME 2018) will be held in the city of Ghent, Belgium. The overall objective of the conference is to bring together international scientists and engineers in academia and industry in fields related to advanced numerical techniques, such as FEM, BEM, IGA, etc., and their applications to a wide range of engineering disciplines. The conference covers industrial engineering applications of numerical simulations to Civil Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, etc.
We are in an era of ‘data’; collection, management and storage of engineering system data is pivotal to the development of efficient systems. What this means for tribology is that there is an unprecedented demand, across engineering sectors (e.g. automotive, aerospace, mechanical), for real-time information on system performance. With such information the operation of many components can be adaptive, responsive and truly ‘smart’. In this Leeds-Lyon Symposium we will capture the exciting developments which cut across many tribological areas to create smart tribological systems. Offerings of original research are requested in (but not limited to) the following areas:
- sensors and sensing approaches
- real-time measurements of surfaces
- data capture and processing in tribology
- responsive/adaptive surfaces/interfaces
- modelling of adaptive and responsive systems
These symposia are jointly sponsored by the University of Leeds (UK) and the Institut National des Sciences Appliquèes (INSA) de Lyon, Université de Lyon (France). The inaugural symposium was held in 1974 and since then there has been an annual meeting in the month of September, the sponsoring Institutions acting as hosts on alternate occasions. After 44 successful events, the symposium has become an established event in the international tribology calendar. Each year the symposium provides an opportunity to tribologists and those working in related fields to discuss and assimilate recent advances of tribology and to exchange views and ideas on a broader basis. The symposium will provide an excellent opportunity to look at tribology embedded in smart engineering systems and reflect on the future of some exciting tribology developments.
The annual conference on Boundary Elements and other Mesh Reduction Methods (BEM/MRM) which started in 1978 is now in its 41st version, to take place in the New Forest, near Southampton (UK).
The meetings since 1978 have produced a collection of edited volumes in which the major developments in the field have been represented. This valuable series has been offered in digital form since 1993, with all papers available Open Access in the Wessex Institute’s eLibrary website (www.witpress.com/elibrary), where they can be easily accessed and downloaded for free.
Since starting in 1978 the Conference has attracted high quality papers that report further advances in techniques that reduce or eliminate the type of meshes associated with finite elements or finite differences, for instance.
Theoretical advances and new foundations have been requested at the Conference for more than 40 years, helping to expand the range of applications as well as the type of materials in response to industrial and professional requirements. This ability to evolve is reflected in the history of the Conference which has ensured the success of the meetings as well as the establishment of a community of stakeholders.
As design, analysis and manufacture become more integrated the chances are that the users will be less aware of the capabilities of the analytical techniques that are at the core of the process. This reinforces the need to retain expertise in certain specialised areas of numerical methods, such as BEM/MRM, to ensure that all new tools perform satisfactorily in the integrated process.
The maturity of BEM since 1978 has resulted in a substantial number of industrial applications which demonstrate the accuracy, robustness and easy use of the technique. Their range still needs to be widened, taking into account the potentialities of the Mesh Reduction techniques in general.
This well-established conference acts as a forum to discuss new ideas and critically compare results before the solution and tools are released to end users.
The meeting welcomes all stakeholders interested in the methods and particularly the participation of young researchers. Their new contributions have been the principal reason why the conference has continued to evolve.

Among the basic tribological phenomena of contact, adhesion, friction, lubrication and wear, wear remains the least scientifically understood. At the same time, wear remains one of the most important tribological phenomena in practice, affecting all aspects of our lives and current technologies. Our understanding of the fundamental processes of wear has been improving recently, due to new theoretical approaches, improved experimental techniques and rapidly growing numerical capabilities. It is felt that now it is the right time to revisit the subject of wear intensively, with a special focus on the understanding of physical mechanisms. The workshop “Science of wear” serves to survey the state-of-the-art in the field of wear research and to map out likely developments in the near future. From a technical point of view, three topics will be in the foreground:

Asia International Conference on Tribology is an event in the series of International Tribology Conferences under the auspices of the Asian Tribology Council (ATC), including countries such as China, Korea, Japan, Australia, India, Malaysia and others.
The use of polymer materials in tribological contacts has increased rapidly in the past few decades. The demand for the polymer-based tribological contacts is evermore increasing, and this trend appears to hold in the future as well.
There are several aspects of polymer properties, production, design and use that could be further improved and tailored to achieve better friction and wear performance, which is the goal of this conference.
After the 2nd Polytrib conference held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, in 2016, with more than 70 attendees from 18 countries, and more than half coming from industrial sector, the 3rd PolyTrib conference tends to bring together a broader range of participants in the whole exploitation chain, from the research and manufacturing to the sales sectors. The goal is to enlarge the audience and serve as a world-wide recognised event for exchange of knowledge in tribology of polymers, which is broadly lacking today.
The conference will welcome several distinguished invited keynote speakers, regular technical sessions, posters, exhibition and social events, with accompanying persons programme.
The 4th International Conference on BioTribology (ICoBT 2018) will be held in Montreal, 26- 29 September 2018.
Biotribology plays an important role in many aspects of our everyday life, from the functioning of articular joints and the comfort of contact lenses to the behaviour of cells and the development of skin injury, such as blisters and bedsores. It is a multidisciplinary field which combines biology, materials, chemistry, surface physics, mechanics and medicine. The aim of the ICoBT meetings therefore is to bring together researchers from across the scientific, clinical and engineering spectrum, to promote communication across the different disciplines and to provide a platform for the presentation of new work in one meeting focused solely on Biotribology.
ICoBT 2018 builds on the successes of the previous three ICoBT meetings. Each meeting had a programme containing over 150 oral and poster presentations and was attended by over 200 delegates with a very diverse background. Sessions covered topics ranging from fundamental science to industrial and clinical applications. The fourth ICoBT will take us to the beautiful city of Montreal, where we introduce a new schedule to the conference, meaning that the meeting will start on the afternoon of Wednesday 26 September and run until midday, Saturday 29 September.
Contributions are welcomed from scientists, researchers, engineers and clinicians working in academia, industry and medicine on fields such as orthopaedic surgery, dentistry, biomechanics, biomaterials, soft matter, cosmetic chemistry, biophysics and biomimetics. The topic of research must be predominately tribology and include a biological surface as part of the interface (e.g. articular cartilage, skin) or have a direct impact on biological function (e.g. prosthetic joints, dental implants). Oral and poster presenters will also be invited to submit a full paper to a Special Issue of the journal Biotribology and participate in the ‘ICoBT 2018 Best Paper Award’ competition.

The Annual Meeting of The Society of Rheology is held in mid-October. The meetings ordinarily last three to four days and are open to both members and non-members. Every effort is made to stimulate and encourage fruitful discussion during the technical sessions, with 25 minutes normally allotted to the presentation and discussion of each paper. There are normally no more than four simultaneous sessions, and the program includes plenary lectures, special symposia, informal evening discussions, and instrument exhibits. A banquet is held to honor the recipients of the Society’s awards: the Bingham Medal, the Journal of Rheology Publication Award, and the Distinguished Service Award, all for outstanding contributions to rheology. The Annual Meeting for those years during which an International Congress of Rheology occurs (2004, 2008, etc.) is held early in the following year (except when the ICR is held in the United States).

“Tribochemistry Hakodate 2019” will be held on September 12 (Thu.) – 14 (Sat.), 2019 in the Hotel Takubokutei, in Hakodate, Hokkaido, Japan. It will be held as a satellite forum of ITC-Sendai.This is the 8th international forum on tribochemistry organized by the Tribochemistry Technical Committee, Japanese Society of Tribologists (JAST).This international forum on tribochemistry has been held as a satellite forum of ITCs and WTCs since 1995: 1) 1995 in Tokyo, Japan, 2) 2000 in Tsukuba, Japan, 3) 2005 in Nara, Japan, 4) 2009 in Kyoto, Japan, 5) 2011 in Hagi, Japan, 6) 2013 in Lyon, France, and 7) 2015 in Nikko, Japan.
This forum will also be held under the cooporation of the Research Association for Computer Application to Catalysis, Catalysis Society of Japan (CatSJ). It will offer invited and contributed presentations in oral and poster sessions.
