Hydraulic-Cylinder Guide-Ring Clearance Probability
Estimate statistical and worst-case radial clearance for a hydraulic-cylinder piston supported by guide or wear rings.
Engineering screening tool—verify inputs and results independently. Use at your own risk.
Tolerance limits
Enter finished-part minimum and maximum dimensions. Each tolerance interval is treated as μ ± 3σ.
Clearance analysis
The estimated 1st-percentile radial clearance remains positive. Verify deformation, alignment, loading, and process capability separately.
Dimension statistics
How to use
- This calculator has one tolerance-stack mode. Enter piston outside-diameter limits Dp,min and Dp,max in mm, with positive Dp,min ≤ Dp,max.
- Enter groove-base diameter limits Dg,min and Dg,max and guide-ring radial-thickness limits Hr,min and Hr,max in mm. Each minimum may equal its maximum for a fixed dimension.
- Select Calculate, or edit any field for an immediate update. Select Reset to restore the 299.5–300 mm piston, 294.5–295 mm groove, and 2.9–3.1 mm ring example.
- Read the 1st-percentile clearance as the canonical screening result. The mean, standard deviation, 99th percentile, worst-case limits, and individual dimension statistics are shown in mm to three decimals.
- Correct any warning before interpreting results. A zero or negative clearance indicates possible geometric contact; a positive value does not account for load, pressure distortion, ring compression, temperature, ovality, misalignment, or correlated manufacturing variation.
- Do not use this model when tolerance limits do not represent centered ±3σ normal distributions, when inputs are correlated or non-normal, or for safety-critical final cylinder design without measured process data and structural verification.
Worked example
1. Enter Dp = 299.5–300 mm, Dg = 294.5–295 mm, and Hr = 2.9–3.1 mm. 2. The calculator returns μCr = 0.500 mm, σCr = 0.068 mm, Cr,1% = 0.342 mm, Cr,99% = 0.658 mm, and worst-case limits 0.150–0.850 mm. 3. The positive statistical and worst-case minima indicate nominal geometric separation for this tolerance stack, but deformation and operating loads still require independent checks.
Equations used
Dimension mean: μx = (xmin + xmax)/2
Dimension deviation: σx = (xmax − xmin)/6
Mean radial clearance: μCr = μDg/2 + μHr − μDp/2
Clearance deviation: σCr = √[(σDg/2)² + σHr² + (σDp/2)²]
1st percentile: Cr,1% = μCr − 2.33σCr
99th percentile: Cr,99% = μCr + 2.33σCr
Worst-case minimum: Cr,min,wc = Dg,min/2 + Hr,min − Dp,max/2
Worst-case maximum: Cr,max,wc = Dg,max/2 + Hr,max − Dp,min/2
x denotes any input dimension; xmin and xmax are its entered tolerance limits; μ is the assumed normal-distribution mean; σ is standard deviation; Dp is piston outside diameter; Dg is groove-base diameter; Hr is radial guide-ring thickness; and Cr is radial clearance. Every dimension uses mm and clearance follows the same unit. Positive Cr means separation; zero or negative Cr means geometric interference/contact. The tolerance limits are assumed to be μ ± 3σ, dimensions are independent, and 2.33 is the retained approximate one-sided standard-normal factor for the 1st and 99th percentiles.
Theory and method
Guide rings support a hydraulic-cylinder piston and are intended to prevent piston-to-bore metallic contact. The available radial travel before nominal contact follows the diametral stack Cr = Dg/2 + Hr − Dp/2. A deterministic check combines adverse tolerance endpoints. The probabilistic check instead converts each centered tolerance width to a standard deviation and combines independent contributions by root-sum-square variance propagation.
Assumptions and limits: each minimum/maximum pair represents ±3σ around a normal mean; manufacturing dimensions are statistically independent and centered; dimensions are positive and expressed at the same reference temperature; and geometry is axisymmetric. Correlation, truncation, process drift, measurement uncertainty, bore tolerance, eccentricity, ovality, thermal growth, pressure distortion, guide-ring compression and wear, lubricant-film effects, side load, and structural deflection are excluded. The 1st-percentile estimate is a dimensional screening quantity, not a complete probability-of-contact or reliability certification.
