Oil Cleanliness Improvement and Machine Life Extension

Oil cleanliness improvement and machine life extension

Explore how a cleaner ISO 4406 target could affect service life using an explicit, user-supplied sensitivity range.

Enter the ≥4 / ≥6 / ≥14 µm(c) channels, for example 18/16/13.

How to use

  1. Enter the current and proposed ISO 4406 three-channel codes in ≥4 / ≥6 / ≥14 µm(c) order.
  2. Select the component family for context. It does not apply a hidden coefficient or proprietary lookup table.
  3. Optionally enter baseline service life in hours to show projected-life scenarios.
  4. Enter low, estimated, and high sensitivity exponents β in ascending order. Use values supported by comparable testing, OEM guidance, or engineering evidence; record that basis when useful.
  5. Select Calculate to update the particle-count ratio, multiplier range, projected life, and plot. Select Reset to restore the worked example.
  6. Interpret the result as a sensitivity scenario. A multiplier above 1 reflects the selected cleaner target and positive β, not a guaranteed life extension. Review every warning and the full range.
  7. Do not use this model as a substitute for oil analysis, failure investigation, filtration design, OEM limits, or reliability testing. It is unsuitable when water, chemistry, wear debris type, additive depletion, operating load, temperature, or another failure mechanism dominates.

Equations used

Let Cold,i and Cnew,i be the current and target ISO scale numbers for channel i = 4, 6, or 14 µm(c). Each one-class decrease represents approximately half the particle concentration.

ri = 2(Cold,i − Cnew,i)
R = (r4 r6 r14)1/3
M(β) = Rβ
Lnew(β) = Lbaseline M(β)

Definitions and units: ri, R, M, and β are dimensionless; L is in hours. Sign convention: The class improvement ΔCi = Cold,i − Cnew,i is positive for a cleaner target. Particle reduction is 100(1 − 1/ri)%. The aggregate R is an equal-weight geometric mean; no channel or component-family coefficient is hidden.

Assumptions and limits: adjacent ISO classes approximately double particle concentration; β is supplied by the user from comparable evidence; cleanliness is the modeled life driver; and baseline conditions otherwise remain comparable. Codes are limited to integers 0–28, target channels may not exceed current channels, and 0 ≤ β ≤ 5.

Method notes and references

ISO 4406 reports solid-particle contamination in three cumulative size channels. This calculator uses only the public doubling-per-class relationship and an explicit power-law sensitivity. It does not reproduce an opaque life-extension table.
