About this event
This two-day event will attempt to address current challenges in the field of transport and for development of materials and surface coatings for use in extreme environments. The latter have many applications for friction and wear reduction in tools for machining and for components required for energy-efficient transport systems. There will be a two day programme of invited speakers, poster sessions, exhibitions of manufacturer’s equipment and a round-table discussion. There will be a two minute slot for brief presentations by poster authors and a prize for the best poster.
The issue of transportation and the environment is paradoxical in nature since transportation conveys substantial socioeconomic benefits, but at the same time, transportation is impacting environmental systems. From one side, transportation activities support increasing mobility demands for passengers and freight, while, on the other, transport activities are associated with growing levels of environmental issues. The growth of personal and freight mobility in recent decades have expanded the role of transportation as a source of emission of pollutants and their multiple impacts on the environment.
As the late Professor Peter Jost pointed out some years ago over 25-30% of our energy usage in running machines and transport systems is used in overcoming friction. More gains in energy-saving could be obtained by operating engines at higher temperatures where, not only fuel efficiency increases, but also, a fuller combustion process occurs which minimises ejection of unused fuel in the exhaust gases. To achieve such gains the development and analysis of new materials and coatings is essential. The speakers and discussion sessions will provide latest information and identify new challenges in all these areas.

The annual TriboUK conference will be held in London, 27-28 April 2017.
TriboUK is a conference specifically aimed to bring together PhD students and post-docs in the field of tribology. The conference offers an excellent opportunity for young researchers to share their work with peers and to build a network both in academia and industry. This annual event is organised by students from a different UK university each year. This year’s event is organised by Imperial College London.
We are accepting abstracts on all research topics concerning tribology.
The lecture topics includes, but not limited to:
Thin film flow modelling. Including hands-on finite difference method implementation of a solution procedure for the 2D Reynolds equation in cylindrical coordinates.
Modelling cavitation in hydrodynamic lubrication by means of the LCP method.
Computational methods for the solution of contact problems, with focus on the boundary element method and the finite element method.
The effect of roughness in contact mechanics, including multi-field problems.
Friction and wear of fullerene-like WS2 & MoS2 nanoparticles. Mechanisms and Applications
Friction, wear and structure of FCC metals and alloys in the transition from elasto-hydrodynamic to boundary lubrication.
Contact mechanics of viscoelastic materials
The scope of this conference embraces the state of art and future trends in tribology research and application, emphasizing the necessity of facilitation intellectual collaboration across both disciplinary and national boundaries.
The IWCMM series aims at covering a broad range of materials and of modelling and simulation techniques to predict their mechanical response. Bringing the respective communities in both academia and industry in touch with each other, it has created a lot of synergy over the years. Recent editions took place in Madrid (2014), Bochum (2015) and Tomsk (2016).
„Friction, lubrication and wear – research and implementation“
is the general heading of the 58th Tribology Conference of the Gesellschaft für Tribologie e.V., the German Society of Tribology, taking place on September 25th-27th in Göttingen (Germany).
70 presentations from industry and research institutes, a poster session in the foyer as well as a trade exhibition with new and established products around Tribology will offer information on latest progresses in science and technology.
Please see the organizers website for more information.
The 89th Annual Meeting of The Society of Rheology will be held in Denver, Colorado on October 8-12, 2017; the optional associated short course will be offered October 7th and 8th. The technical program will take place at the Embassy Suites in center of downtown Denver. Local attractions include dozens of shops and restaurants on the 16th Street Mall (just 2 blocks from the Embassy Suites), Pixabay] Colorado History Museum (site of the Monday reception), Colorado State Capitol, and many other opportunities for dining and site-seeing.
The average high and low temperatures in Denver during October are 66°F and 33°F, respectively, with an average 1.4 inches of precipitation. Temperature decrease dramatically after sundown in the Mile High City, so plan on bringing a jacket even if predicted high temperatures are in the 60s or 70s.

The International TWC Wear Seminar concentrates on the selection and development of coatings for wear protection, tribological and wear testing of coatings, and practical aspects of wear resistant coatings.
Adhesion is a phenomenon that plays an important role in many technical applications as well as in biological systems and medical applications. Many aspects of this phenomenon are still not well understood. The workshop is intended to provide an intensive exchange of information on the state of research on the rapidly developing area of “adhesion and friction”, whereby “friction” also means “internal friction” (and thus adhesion of elastomers). Invited are representatives of physically and mechanically oriented research as well as representatives of the fields of application – in mechanical engineering, biology and medicine. The targeted applications are adhesion both on the macroscopic level and on the scale of cells (which is of great importance, for example, in cancer research) and even on the scale of individual molecules
· Influence of macroscopic shape on adhesion
· Influence of roughness on adhesion
· Numerical simulation of adhesive contacts
· Experimental studies of adhesion
· Adhesion of viscoelastic media
· Interplay of adhesion and friction
· Modeling of adhesive contacts with friction
· Adhesion and tribology of gradient materials
· Adhesion and friction in biological microstructures
· Adhesion of cells and testing methods based on adhesion
· Molecular adhesion

Enhancing the efficiency and durability of machines by controlling friction and wear is receiving an enormous and increasing significance in modern industrial applications. New stringent environmental legislations oblige companies and OEMs to enhance the efficiency of products to comply with higher loads, lower viscosities and restricted lubricant ingredients. To efficiently address this demand, the clever combination of design methodologies, new materials, modern lubricants and additives have to be realised. New lubricants and additives have to be tailored for new materials and the other way round the lubricants and additives have to be considered as design criteria.
The Programme Planning Committee of the 21st international Colloquium Tribology, as one of the world-wide largest international conferences in Tribology, is attempting the goal to provide a forum for technical and scientific exchange between lubricant and additive manufacturers, automotive OEMs, component manufacturers, suppliers, research organizations and universities.
